NJ HOSA STUDENT FAQ PAGE

  • Where do students upload their materials for competitive events?

Advisors will be responsible for uploading all materials for competitive events. All required documents, videos, and presentations must be submitted by the event deadline listed in the NJ HOSA Competitive Event Guidelines.

  • What is the dress code for the competitive events?

All competitors must follow the HOSA Dress Code as outlined in the HOSA Competitive Event Guidelines. This includes official HOSA attire or appropriate business attire. Competitors not following the dress code may lose points or be disqualified.

Acceptable options include:

  • Official HOSA uniform (navy blazer, white shirt/blouse, navy slacks/skirt)
  • Business attire (suit, dress shirt, slacks/skirt, dress shoes)
  • For certain events, specific attire may be required—refer to the event’s guidelines for details.

  • What should students bring to event check-in?

Students should bring the following items to event check-in:

  • Photo ID (such as a school ID or driver’s license)
  • Event confirmation or schedule (if provided by your advisor or HOSA)
  • Any materials required for your event, such as notebooks, binders, or equipment listed in the event guidelines (READ THE GUIDELINES)
  • HOSA uniform or business attire if required for your event

Advisors may also provide additional instructions based on your school or event type.

  • Can I change my registration before the conference?

Students are not responsible for any registration issues. Any concerns regarding registration should be directed to chapter advisors. Advisors may reach out to NJ HOSA at any time to gather more information regarding the registration process.

  • If a student is registered and can’t attend the conference, can I substitute another student in his/her place?

Students are not responsible for any registration issues. Any concerns regarding registration should be directed to chapter advisors. Advisors may reach out to NJ HOSA at any time to gather more information regarding the registration process.

  • Is there a way to go to SLC if I didn’t place in my competition?

Yes! Even if you didn’t place in your competition, you can still attend the State Leadership Conference (SLC) as a delegate, volunteer, or local officer representative, depending on your chapter’s policies. SLC offers workshops, networking opportunities, and leadership sessions open to all registered attendees—not just competitors.

Additionally, NJ HOSA offers state-specific events each year that give students new opportunities to compete and get involved—even if they didn’t qualify through regional events.

  • How do I become a State Officer?

To become a NJ HOSA State Officer, students must meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the State Officer Application Packet, which is released each year before the State Leadership Conference (SLC). Candidates must complete the application, obtain required signatures, and participate in the State Officer screening and election process at SLC. The application can be obtained through chapter advisors.

  • How do I start a new chapter?
  1. To begin, a teacher, health science instructor, or school staff member must agree to serve as the chapter advisor. Then:
  2. Contact NJ HOSA to receive the New Chapter Registration Packet and guidance on getting started.
  3. Recruit interested students and elect local officers.
  4. Submit membership information and dues through the HOSA online affiliation system.
  5. Once your chapter is officially registered, you’ll gain access to NJ HOSA updates, conferences, and competitive events!

  • Where do I find the guidelines for my event?

All event guidelines can be found in the NJ HOSA Competitive Event Guidelines document, available on the NJ HOSA website under the Competitive Events section. Each event listing includes details about:

  • Rules and requirements
  • Materials needed
  • Dress code
  • Submission deadlines

Students should review the guidelines carefully to ensure they are fully prepared for their event.

  • How does my chapter register for my conference?

Your chapter registers for conferences through the HOSA Online System (Tallo). The chapter advisor is responsible for:

  1. Logging into the system.
  2. Adding all student members who will attend.
  3. Selecting the events each student will participate in.
  4. Submitting membership dues and event fees by the registration deadline.

It’s important to complete registration on time to secure your spot and ensure all students are eligible to compete.
